About biomedicalenglish.com

I have been involved in teaching English as a foreign language for over 30 years and apart from my first degree (a BA (Hons) in European Studies from the University of Bath) along the way have acquired the following formal qualifications: a Diploma in TESOL from Trinity College London, an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Exeter and finally a Ph.D in Applied Linguistics from the University of Wales (Swansea) where I had the honor of working with Professor Paul Meara.

I started working in the Instituto de Idiomas of the University of Navarra in Pamplona (Spain) in 1990 and since then I have been increasingly involved in the field of biomedical English. Currently, I teach on a wide range of courses in this general area. At the undergraduate level I give courses in Medical English, Medical Consultations in English, Presentations for Healthcare Professionals and English for Pharmacists. At the postgraduate level I teach modules (focusing on reading, writing or presenting in English, or any combination of these skills) on 6 different Masters courses(Máster Universitario en Química Aplicada a la Investigación y la Industria, Máster Universitario en Atención Farmacéutica en Geriatría , Máster Universitario Europeo en Alimentación, Nutrición y Metabolismo, Máster Universitario en Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovacion de Medicamentos (I+D+I), Máster Universitario en Diseño Galénico y Biofarmacia and Máster Universitario en Investigación Biomédica ) and also a course for nurses just beginning their specialization helping them to get to grips with the research literature.

My other main academic activity is my work on a masters in Language Teaching on which I teach modules on evaluation, ESP, vocabulary and CALL.

Apart from all this I am also involved in the more professional side of biomedical language. I am the official translator for the Journal of Investigational Allergology and Clinical Immunology and frequently work as an author's editor helping researchers in preparing their manuscripts for publication. I have also recently written 3 on-line writing/presentation skills courses (for surgeons, and specialists in osteoporosis and obstetrics) and over half a dozen small guides to writing and presenting for different medical subspecialities.
